Weekend Reads 17.1.8 from Let Me Give You Some AdviceFrom time to time I’ll share some links to some of my favorite reads. I know there are a lot of voices out there but these are a few I’ve found that were worth sharing and hopefully add to your own learning and growing.

Happy weekend!

Self Control is Just Empathy With Your Future Self [The Atlantic]
“The same part of the brain that allows us to step into the shoes of others also helps us restrain ourselves.” Such an interesting look at how neuroscience helps us understand how our brain impacts our behavior. I like the idea of telling myself that restraint now means I’m being kind to my future self. It makes putting down the extra peanut butter M&Ms a tiny bit easier.

What the Hell is Hygge, and Will It Make Winter Less Awful? [Scary Mommy]
A Nordic term that’s been appropriated by hipsters, this idea of “self-care, gratitude, and simple comforts” is the new survival plan for winter. So go ahead, put on those sweatpants and fuzzy socks and sip your tea with the self-assurance that you’re very on-trend these days.

How I Became a Morning Person, Read More Books and Learned a Language in a Year [Fast Company]
“The distance between where I was starting and where I wanted to be was so great that I would fail a lot. And each failure made it harder to succeed the next day.” This is the reason that I’m usually hate resolutions but I thought the process the author went through to change her habits was so interesting. Small baby steps that make it easy to not give up and a longer time period to learn a new habit…I could almost get on board with that.

Why I’m Teaching Prisoners to Code [Ted.com]
“When I was finished speaking, hands went into the air. My thirty-minute talk turned into a two-hour discussion. These men were prepared, motivated and committed to learning how they could create a better life after they served their time. This was not the profile of social misfits that I had expected to encounter.” A short read about an interesting program that works with prisoners. I appreciated it for it’s hopeful tone and willingness to give a different perspective of our criminal justice system.
